Set your rear view mirror
When you first get into your vehicle, sit up tall. Set your rearview mirror
so you can see well out your rear window. As you drive, when you begin to slouch, you’ll notice you can’t see out your mirror very well. It’s not the mirror’s fault. Sit up tall and stop slouching!
Extend your lumbar support
Nearly every vehicle has an adjustable lumbar support. Move it as far forward as possible. Some can be adjusted up and down also. If you’re taller, move it up and if you’re shorter, move it down. If it isn’t supporting your lower back well enough, you may need to add a small towel rolled up or a small pillow for support. Keeping the proper curve in your lower back helps your shoulders stay over your hips and makes it easier to keep your head from tilting forward.
Make sure your hips are at the same height or higher than your knees
This one is REALLY important. When your hips are below your knees, your hip flexor muscles shorten and will pull on your lower back, irritating the joints, muscles and nerves. This seat position is harder to attain on lower vehicles but it can still be done. If you’re finding it hard, put a small towel under your behind to lift up your hips. Ask us if you need help!
