When our bodies are in a state of ease, there is optimal function, healing, and cell repair. As you know, this is all controlled by our brain and nerve system. It means there is a healthy response to any stress around us – physical, chemical and/or emotional. If you gardened for 8 hours, and you rarely spend time doing that activity, would you be surprised to be sore the next day or two? You would be sore from inflammation, which is a healthy response as tissues are repaired. Would it surprise you to have a headache that lasted a few hours after you had an argument with your spouse or children? You would expect to feel bloated and heavy after eating a meal full of carbohydrates. We heal fully and there are no lasting effects when we are in a state of ease.
Dis-ease, or ‘lack of ease’, is when there is less than normal healing and cell repair. When subluxation occurs, it limits the amount of body to brain connection, and as you know, decreases function, healing and cell repair. When dis-ease begins, there are few, if any, symptoms to signal to you that a problem is occurring. Can you have tooth decay, cancer, joint degeneration, diabetes or blood vessel damage without symptoms or pain? We all know someone diagnosed with cancer, who didn’t live very long after they were diagnosed. Screening tests for cancer and other diseases only exist because we can’t rely on symptoms to tell us how well we’re functioning. Why do children or adults with no symptoms get adjusted? To make sure they’re at EASE!
“You treat a disease…you win…you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome.” ~ Robin Williams as Patch Adams
A disease is a “disorder of structure or function, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.” This is where much of western medicine has invested time, energy and resources. When a specific set of symptoms or signals can be classified, guidelines can be followed to treat that disease. Patients are given something from the outside, with the belief that it is required for any healing to occur. Disease treatment can be life-saving, but it never creates a higher level of healing and function.
